Dev Log#3 - Prototype period done!
The last prototyping week comes to an end and it leaves us a finished tech document and an artbible. Mechanics and characters are set, naming conventions clear and the mom has her slipper.
Development
We have a fantastic prototype, that is already playable for three players (mom and 2 babies) . The biggest problem that we had to face this week was the movement of the baby. Last week it was more frustrating to move and determine the direction of the babies with two buttons. Now the babies gain speed if you press the two buttons alternately and the direction will be defined with the controllstick, which gives the player more control over the actions. But the player can also act now like a baby and receives feedback. If the mom grasps you, smash the buttons to try to escape.
In the beginning a little bug tried to manipulate our work. Every time after a baby was released from the playpen and tried to walk away, it got spawned back to the playpen. But the bug was easily fixed and a further action for the babies got implemented in the game. The babies can activate items now, which can be used after a short timeframe and give the player more points (juhuu!).
And now, the mom can throw her heroic slipper!! With that she can stun the babies and of course she can collect her slipper again to throw it again. In the beginning it was pretty hard to hit the babies with the slipper, which was simply fixed with a bigger collision.
Art
On the artside of life we defined the look of our characters. We will go for a stylized design, so the babys have oversized heads and the mom won't need her mouth.
We also took care about our scene, the logo and UI design, colors, lighting, muic and many more... Now everything sealed in a document the next step will be to model character and assets and bring them together with the prototype.Beyond we perused the breakdown of an item from the start to the end. So we figured out that the best pipeline will be a modeling in 3DsMax and bake and texture in Substance. A problem for the artists is the uncharted land Unity. The workflow and the UI is different in Unreal and has to be explored and mastered first.
Goals
For next week we will go deeper into Unity. We will implement new features for the babies and mom, like the interacting with the surrounding. But also the interactions between mother and babies will be more in the focus.
For the artist it's now the time to model and create 3D objects and character.
And of course a very important part in every week will be testing testing testing!
