DevLog#6 - End of the first Production week

We enter now the second week of the first production sprint. Last week we had to reimplement most of our core mechanics as our movement was behaving weirdly. Now that many of the most important aspects in our game are re-implemented, we can start adding more and more new features as well as inserting our art assets.

Art:

The babies have faces!!! (even though this sounds weird) and 4 different textures.

The faces of the babies are painted on top of the 3D model to give them this cartoony style we are looking for.  Also we changed the size of the baby. The first time we loaded the baby in the scene it had the size of a fridge. But with some quick resizing in 3DsMax we changed our Godzillababy to normal size.

On the other end, the kitchen is still a work in progress, but the room is developing very fast now as most of the aspects are done and ready. To stay in our style we give all kitchen elements a crooked feeling and make them really stylized. As the first elements we have kitchencounters and a fridge, the most important part in a kitchen hehe.

Programming:

As said before, most of the core mechanics have been re-implemented: the slippers can be thrown and will stun the babies if they hit one.

The intractable objects such as the dangerous ones (blender) or simple ones are present in the scene and can be activated. Knives and cookies will spawn and respawn on the ground if picked up and the PlayBox is fully functional (the babies can be picked up by the mother and then be placed inside their cot where they will be trapped for a certain amount of time.

Bugs and Fixes:

We encountered a few issues this past week that are important to mention. Some small ones such as the baby floating in the air because it has no gravity attached to it or weird teleportation behaviors associated with the “fun box” (baby cot).

We also encountered the problem that the mother could throw eternity slippers in a incredible speed and instead of stunning the babies, they could collect the slippers. Additionally we stumbled over some controller issues. The second player froze from time to time if the first player started to move first. but the small issues were easily fixed and made way for new bugs.

We also run across some big problems, such as P4V not ignoring the Library folder of our submission for the Unity project on one of our computers. We tried to fix most of them, but the last one with the Library but even the found official solution didn’t work.

Tasks for next week:

  • Try to implement as many new features as possible
  • Continue working on the environment models and implement them in the game
  • Finish the model of the mother
  • Learn how to implement materials in Unity, so they look like they should do
  • Rig the babies to start animations as soon as possible
  • Try to fix all the non-game related issues we have (example: perforce P4V – Unity Library)
